This hugely popular book is popular for a reason; it's a downright good book. Katniss Everdeen lives in a time when North America has collapsed and the remaining survivors formed thirteen districts called Panem ruled by the Capitol. When the 13 Districts rebeled against the Capitol and the government beat them into obedience again, they formed the Hunger Games to show the citizens the power they had over them still. The 12 remaining districts (13 was eliminated during the rebellion) are required to send in one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to fight to the death in an arena they're constructed. When Primrose, Katniss' 12 year old sister, is decided to be the female representative of District 12, 16 year old Katniss volunteers in her place. Things get even more complicated when Peeta Mallark, a boy from Katniss' past, is chosen as the male tribute. They both set off on the cruel adventure of participating in the Hunger Games with suprises and unexpected events at every turn.

The Ruins Gorlan by John Flanagan
This fantasy novel by John Flanagan is an introduction to the main characters that will be throughout the 10 books in the Ranger's Apprentice series (Ruins of Gorlan is book 1). Young, orphan Will wants to become a soldier in honor of his father that was killed in a battle but Battle School won't accept him because he's too small. No one will take him as an apprentice except for the mysterious Ranger, Halt. His apprenticeship starts with a dull and boring start but before he knows it, he's swept away into adventures he never expected he would encounter.
